Canadian pianist Bruce Liu is a household name. He was born in Paris but grew up in Montreal, where he learned to play the piano at age eight and started giving public performances a year later. By 2021, he was a household name, thanks to his victory in the XVIII International Chopin Piano Competition.

Every five years, there is a competition that is like the Olympics for piano prodigies, and Bruce Liu is the first Canadian to win first place. When he won $57,500, he went from being a relative unknown to a classical music superstar. Online audiences have taken to dubbing him “Bruce Almighty” due to his commanding stage presence.

Bruce Liu was born on May 8, 1997, to Chinese parents in Paris. When he was six years old, he relocated to Montreal with his father. He has always had a deep connection to China, both as a destination and a cultural influence, and as a result, he is fluent in Mandarin and has lived there for much of his life. He was raised in Canada and has strong links to Europe, so he is influenced by different ways of life and perspectives on the human condition. Between 2011 and 2018, he studied under Richard Raymond at the Montreal Conservatoire, where he first gained attention after taking first place in the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal Competition at the age of 15.

On March 29, 2022—coincidentally, World Piano Day—Bruce Liu signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Previously, the Yellow Label had released an album with live recordings from the Chopin Competition, which they had made in collaboration with the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The record premiered on 19 November 2021, a full month after Liu was declared the victor, and was received with a deluge of acclaim. His playing has been described as having “uncommon sensitivity,” “rumbustious vitality,” and “breathtaking beauty” by BBC Music Magazine, among other publications.

On April 1, Bruce Liu released an e-single, including his rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne in C sharp minor, KK IVa/16. More songs from the album will be released throughout the year. Two further CDs are in the works; one will include pieces by Tchaikovsky, including the difficult Piano Concerto No. 2, while the other will concentrate on French music, including Chopin and Rameau, reflecting his desire to explore the music of his homeland.

In creating his works, Bruce Liu is influenced by a wide range of cultures and eras, including those of Europe and China, as well as North America for its energy and acceptance. In his pursuit of his artistic goals, he has been inspired by the likes of Richard Raymond and Dang Thai Son.
