Jonah Yano Biography

Jonah Yano, a Japanese-Canadian composer, creates jazzy soul-pop laced with hip-hop and electronic influences. It wasn’t until 2020 that his first album, Souvenir, was published.

Yano, a small boy, born in Hiroshima whose parents divorced when he was young, moved to Vancouver with his mother in 1998. His grandmother gave him his first piano lesson when he was six years old, and he subsequently taught himself to play guitar and started writing original songs. After coming to Toronto in 2016, he began posting songs online and dipping himself in the city’s burgeoning local music scene, where he steadily honed his abilities. His first recorded performance occurred in 2018 when he was featured on indie pop-rap duo Moneyphone’s tune “On Lock.” His first solo effort, “Rolex, The Ocean,” featured his now-iconic sound: jazzy soul-pop over hip-hop rhythms, with Yano’s soaring, emotive vocals. After signing with Innovative Leisure in 2019, his first extended play, titled Nervous, was published.
