Canadian rhythm and blues artist Savannah Ré hails from the city of Scarborough, Ontario. This musician was raised in a musically-inclined Jamaican household that appreciated a wide range of genres, including reggae, dancehall, and R&B.
This sparked a newfound appreciation for early artists like Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill, TLC, and Destiny’s Child. Savannah Ré spent her formative years in Scarborough, where the local culture and people helped shape who she would become. While still in high school, she decided to pursue singing professionally, and she spent the next eight years honing her skills, growing her fan base, and producing high-quality material. Because of this, in 2018, she was able to sign with Boi-1da, a Grammy-winning producer from Toronto, to his one music label at Universal Music Canada. Moreover, Savannah Ré has collaborated with well-known musicians, including Normani, Daniel Caesar, Babyface, and WondaGurl. She has also toured with Jessie Reyez, where she got to understand the meaning of “go hard or go home” and developed into a powerful performer to add to her already impressive resume.
The artist has put a lot of time and effort into her first EP, Opia, in the fall of 2020. Neither Boi-1da nor Ré’s husband, YogiTheProducer, is a stranger to the production world; they both worked on this. All of the songs on this album were written and recorded over the course of three years, and the results are flawless. The term Opia is meant to be intimate, since the word “opia” means “to stare at” or “to look into,” connoting a direct, unsettling gaze. Re’s Opia is a representation of raw emotion, exposure, and the complexity of love.
At the 2021 Juno Awards, Savannah Ré’s “Solid” received the award for Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, while her “Where You Are” was nominated for Contemporary R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Following that, Opia was included on the longlist for the upcoming 2021 Polaris Music Prize. In 2021, her music video for “Solid,” directed by Alicia K. Harris, was shortlisted for the Prism Award.
