Musical Career
He made his debut with the Russian National Orchestra in the year 2000, and it was with that orchestra that he later recorded the 5th Piano Concerto by Sergey Prokofiev and the Piano Concerto by Maurice Ravel. In 2004, he presented and conducted an original transcription/adaptation of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons for piano and strings at both the Grand Théatre de Luxembourg and the Beaux-Arts in Brussels. The piece was originally written for orchestra. His performance at the Philharmonie Luxembourg earned him a nomination for the Carnegie Hall Rising Stars series hosted by the European Concert Hall Organization in 2008.
He is an authority on music from the Baroque period as well as modern music. In the year 2001, Tristano established the ensemble known as The New Bach Players, with whom he went on to record the entirety of Johann Sebastian Bach’s keyboard concertos for the Accord label. In addition to that, he has made recordings of the Goldberg Variations and the French Suites, as well as the first book of Toccatas by Girolamo Frescobaldi. He is also very involved in contemporary music, as evidenced by the fact that he has recorded all of Luciano Berio’s works for piano and collaborated with artists in the electronic music genre such as Carl Craig and Murcof. He won the 2004 Concours International de piano XXe siècle d’Orléans.
He was a member of the Aufgang group, along with Rami Khalife and Aymeric Westrich, which released their self-titled album in 2009. He left the group in 2009. In February 2014, Francesco Tristano parted ways with Aufgang. Istiklaliya and Air on Fire are two albums that were also released by the trio. The members of Aufgang, Rami Khalifé, and Aymeric Westrich have decided to continue the band as a duo.
