Benjamin Kruithof Biography.
In 1999, Benjamin was born in Luxembourg to his parents who were both musicians. He was exposed to classical music at a young age because his mother is a violinist and his father is a violist. Benjamin started playing the violin when he was four years old and later switched to the cello. His first teacher was Raju Vidali, who he met at the Conservatoire du Nord in Luxembourg. At the age of twelve, he gave his first solo performance with the orchestra of the conservatoire, solidifying his commitment to a career in cello. His full name is Benjamin Kruithof.
After that, Benjamin kept up his studies at the Conservatorium Maastricht with Mirel Iancovici in the Young Talent Class. Beginning his formal education in 2014, he enrolled at the Cologne University of Music to study under Katharina Deserno and Maria Kliegel. In addition, while studying at the Conservatoire du Nord, he benefited from Niall Brown’s guidance. He has been a student of Jens Peter Maintz’s at the University of the Arts in Berlin since 2017. Master classes with Niall Brown at the International Menuhin Music Academy, Gustav Rivinius in Mondorf-les-Bains, Daniel Müller-Schott at the Festival International Echternach, Maria Kliegel at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the International Autumn Days of Music in Iserlohn, and most recently with Jens Peter Maintz at the International Music Institute of Cologne provided him with additional musical impulses. Additionally, he has been awarded a scholarship to the Music Academy and attends the intensive study weeks on a regular basis.
Benjamin’s musical prowess has been recognized on a global scale. His most recent accomplishment is a silver medal from the Gabrielli Competition in Berlin. In June of 2017, Benjamin took first place and audience and orchestra prizes at the Grand Prix Anne et Françoise Groben. He won first place and the Prix spéciaux at the Parisian Concours Flame and the Concours Prodige Art the year prior (1st prize). In 2015, he won multiple prizes at the International Knopf competition held by the International Music Academy Anton Rubinstein in Dusseldorf and the Concours international Léopold Bellan (1st prize & special prize of the jury) (special prize). In addition, in 2014, he won first place and the Prix de Sacem at the Ecole de Musique de l’UGDA’s Concours luxembourgeois pour Jeunes Solistes.
Since his 2011 debut as a soloist, Benjamin has performed with the orchestra of the Conservatoire des Musique Esch in Metz, in the Kulturhaus Niederanvenin with Martin Elmquist, in Saint-Cloud, France, near Paris, and as a laureate and member of the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY), at the Young Talent concert in Luxembourg. He conducted the Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg through Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme in the philharmonic hall back in June of 2017. In 2019, Benjamin gave a recital at the Gasteig in Munich and toured China, where he performed at illustrious venues such as the Changsha Concert Hall, Renmin University Hall, and the Guangzhou Opera House.
